The Fresno Bee

Artists you should know: Mercy Fist

Music is a universal pastime, a common language that can reach beyond barriers of culture, religion or economic status. Hearing music can -— and should be — a moving experience. Those ideals drive the local four-piece rock band Mercy Fist.

The band is currently recording a new album and will release a video for the single “Save Me,” in the next few weeks. In the meantime, they play 7:30 p.m. Friday at Kuppajoe with Comrades, Days Under Authority and Clockwork Hero. This is an all-ages show.

The Bee caught up with the band to find out about its music, its message and if there’s an artist they think you should know.

Who plays in the band? How did you meet and how long have you been playing together?

The band consists of lead singer and rhythm guitarist Chris Hudiburgh, drummer and vocalist Kaleb Smith, lead guitarist Brett Posch and our newest member on bass, Dom Cassinerio. The band started as a worship group for New Harvest Church and eventually branched off into writing original music. We have been together now about 31/2 years now.

How would you describe the band, musically?

Mercy Fist is best described as a high-energy rock group, with a melodic undertone. Coming from different backgrounds, each member has different musical influences ranging from things like the Foo Fighters to acts like Johnny Cash or Rush. The variety of our influences helps us all pour in a little of ourselves into the music we create.

You talk about music moving the listener in some deep way, about creating music to reach the broken. What do you mean by that and how does it play out in your songwriting, etc.?

Our lyrics are an expression of different life experiences we have gone through. We all have had experiences that have shaped who we are today, and we want the masses to know that they are not alone in situations they may experience. Even if we help one person get through something, it’s worth it to us.

Being as you play in the local scene, is there an artist or band that you think people should know?

There is a band out of Clovis West High School called Valkyrie Missile. We have seen them from when they first started and how hard they worked. That instills a little reminder of where we came from and why we do this.

What did I miss?

In the end, we all play because we love expressing our passion through music. Every person has their own unique qualities and skill sets. Our tool just happens to be music. We all work full-time jobs and are just four normal guys. No better than anyone else. Every person has something to offer to this world. They just need someone to listen.
